Freedom 251 Scam or Not? : Proudly called by the makers as the world’s cheapest smartphone in human history, Freedom 251 was a scam like no other. The company behind Freedom 251 Scam, Ringing Bells targeted everyone starting from teenagers to old veterans, with their jaw dropping price of Smartphones. Officially declared a scam by the government let’s take a look at the happenings of the company.

Marketed as the world’s cheapest Smartphone, and a new initiative under Narendra Modi’s Make in India initiative, Freedom 251 Scam was being sold by Ringing Bells Private Limited, at a jaw dropping price of Rs. 251, as of August, 2016. Bharatiya Janata Party, Minister of Parliament, Kirit Somaiya had filed a complaint against the company as being a Ponzi scam. The complaint led to the registration of a FIR, which further led the way to a case against Director Mohit Goel and company President Ashok Chadda. Ringing Bells Private Limited has been charged under section 420 of the Indian Penal Code as well as the Information Technology Act, ITC.

The promotion behind the Freedom 251 Scam

Ringing Bells Private Limited, the driving company behind Freedom 251 adopted a unique and clever marketing strategy that lured people into buying the Smartphone. The company set the promotional price of Rs. 251 and so the name Freedom 251 Scam. The promotional price was being offered only for a limited time between 18th to 21st February, 2016. On the first day of registration, the website crashed as it was not designed to handle the immense traffic that it got. Before crashing, the website had already taken the registration of 30,000 phones at a nominal price of Rs. 251. After the crash, the website quickly came online and continued to take registrations. The company announced that the normal price of the phone will be Rs. 500, but the promotional price will only be available to early birds. By the end of the registration period, the company claimed that it had already taken registrations worth Rs. 17.5 million.

The handset, aptly titled Freedom 251 came with the following specifications-

  • Memory- 1GB Ram
  • Storage- 8GB

Other than the above, the users have the choice of expanding the memory upto 32GB with the use of an external micro SD card. The phone is powered by a 1450 mAh Lithium-ion battery which is capable enough to run the phone up to 5 hours on a single charge. The phone USB 2.0 and Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity as well are included.

Conclusion of Freedom 251 Scam or Not?

After the FIR was launched, Telecom Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad was asked to intervene in the matter. The government has told that it is never possible to sell a phone with these specifications at such a low price. The minimum price of such a phone should be at least Rs. 3,500. As several reports show, the promotional price of Rs. 251 can only be offered when the manufacturing company undertakes strategic tie-ups with advertising companies, and that too only when a number of handsets are in circulation. Ringing Bells has been called to be a downright Ponzi Scam, and as of now no official press release has been given the company.
